Have You Ever Felt Stuck in an Unfinished Story?
Think about a movie or book you’ve experienced where the ending just didn’t come together. No resolution, no answers, no closure—just questions hanging in the air. Frustrating, isn’t it?
Life often feels like one of those unfinished stories. Relationships fall apart, dreams slip through our fingers, and sometimes, it feels like we’re just stuck in the messy middle. We want closure, yet life seems to say, “Not yet.”
This leaves us wondering: What does Jesus, the Alpha and Omega, have to say about the unfinished parts of our lives?
Jesus Is the Alpha: The Beginning of All Things
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” (Revelation 22:13)
Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and Jesus uses this title to remind us that He is the Creator and the starting point of everything.
As John 1:1-3 says: “In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.”
Think about the beginnings in your own life—new jobs, relationships, or seasons. Those fresh starts are evidence of Jesus working as the Alpha. But here’s the challenge: beginnings don’t always mean instant completion. Sometimes, what Jesus starts in our lives is still in progress, and we need to trust Him to carry it forward.
Jesus Is the Omega: The End of All Things
At the other end of the spectrum, Jesus is also the Omega—the end of all things. He assures us in Revelation 21:6, “I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life.”
As Omega, Jesus is the One who will bring every story to its perfect conclusion. This is comforting because, right now, we live in the “in-between.” Life feels unresolved:
- Relationships remain broken.
- Dreams stay unrealized.
- Questions linger unanswered.
Even in the Bible, Jesus left some stories unfinished. Have you ever noticed this?
- The Older Brother in the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32): Did he join the celebration?
- The Rich Young Ruler (Mark 10:17-22): Did he ever return to follow Jesus?
- The Ten Lepers (Luke 17:11-19): Only one returned to thank Jesus—what happened to the other nine?
Why didn’t Jesus tie up these loose ends? Perhaps it’s because these stories mirror our own lives. Life feels incomplete here on earth, but Jesus promises that, in the end, He will make all things new.
What About the In-Between?
Here’s the good news: Jesus isn’t just at the start and finish; He’s also present in the middle. He’s here with us in the messy, unresolved parts of life.
Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”
Jesus Meets Us in Our Incompleteness
One of the most beautiful things about Jesus is that He doesn’t wait for us to have it all together. He meets us in the middle of our struggles.
Take the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:1-26). She was stuck in a cycle of broken relationships and shame. Yet Jesus met her right there, offering her living water and a fresh start.
Her story wasn’t finished when Jesus found her, but His presence changed everything.
Jesus Transforms the Unfinished into Something Beautiful
It’s easy to think that God starts the work in us, but it’s our job to finish it. Thankfully, that’s not how Jesus operates.
Philippians 1:6 reassures us, “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”
The unfinished parts of our lives—whether they’re broken relationships, unrealized dreams, or lingering doubts—are not failures. They’re works in progress. And in the hands of Jesus, they become masterpieces.
Illustration: A Quilt in Progress
Have you ever seen a quilt being made? At first, it looks chaotic—scraps of fabric, mismatched colors, loose threads everywhere. But in the hands of a skilled maker, those pieces come together into something beautiful.
Your life might feel like that unfinished quilt right now, but Jesus sees the masterpiece He’s creating.
Looking Forward with Hope
Paul writes in Philippians 3:13-14: “Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”
This doesn’t mean we ignore the past. Instead, we let go of what holds us back—whether it’s regret, failure, or even pride in past successes. Jesus invites us to focus on what He’s doing now and trust Him with what’s still unresolved.
And one day, Jesus promises a perfect ending:
- “He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Revelation 21:4)

Final Thoughts
Life is full of unfinished stories, but that’s not something to fear. The unfinished parts of your life are places where Jesus is still working.
Trust Him as the Alpha who starts good things in your life, the Omega who will bring them to completion, and the One who walks with you in the messy, unresolved middle.
In the hands of Jesus, the unfinished isn’t a problem—it’s a promise of something beautiful yet to come.
