The Longing for a Near God: Emmanuel—God With Us in Every Season

During the devastation of World War II, Dietrich Ritschl, a German theologian, lay injured in a makeshift hospital in a bombed-out railroad station. Amid the chaos and despair, his eyes caught an inscription on a remaining roof beam: “Beyond the stars, there must live a gracious Father.”

At first, these words pointed to God’s transcendence—His existence beyond the chaos of the world. But Ritschl’s suffering stirred a deeper yearning: not for a God who was distant, but for a God who was near. He longed for Emmanuel—“God with us.”

This story touches a universal human desire: the longing for a God who is close, who shares in our suffering, and who walks with us in every season of life.

1. God’s Eternal Plan: Intimacy with Humanity

From the beginning, God designed humanity for closeness with Him.

  • God’s Nearness in Creation
    • Genesis 3:8 (NLT) tells us that God walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, enjoying perfect relationship with them.
    • Even after sin severed this bond, God sought to restore intimacy with His creation.
  • God’s Nearness in the Tabernacle
    • Exodus 25:8: God instructed Israel to build the Tabernacle so He could dwell among His people.
    • The Tabernacle was a powerful symbol of God’s desire to be present with humanity, even in their brokenness.

2. Jesus is Emmanuel: God With Us

The ultimate expression of God’s nearness came through Jesus Christ.

  • John 1:14 (NLT): “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”
    • Jesus walked on dusty roads, attended weddings, healed the sick, and shared meals with sinners.
  • The Prophecy of Emmanuel
    • Isaiah 7:14 (NLT) foretold a virgin who would bear a son named Emmanuel, meaning “God with us.”
    • This prophecy, given during a time of political turmoil under King Ahaz, reminded Israel of God’s presence even when they doubted Him.

3. God With Us in Every Season

In the Valleys

  • Psalm 23:4 (NLT): “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.”
    • God’s presence brings comfort in life’s darkest moments.

In the Wilderness

  • Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19 reminds us that God meets us in our exhaustion and despair.
    • In the wilderness, God restored Elijah with food, water, and a gentle whisper, proving He is near in our lowest moments.

In the Storms

  • Mark 4:39-40 (NLT): Jesus calmed the storm, showing that His presence brings peace, even amid chaos.
    • True peace isn’t the absence of storms but the presence of Jesus.

In Our Struggles

  • Psalm 34:18 (NLT): “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
    • Emmanuel is near to the hurting, offering hope and healing.

4. Emmanuel: God With Us for Eternity

Jesus’ mission didn’t end on Earth; it points to an eternal future where God will dwell with His people forever.

  • John 14:2-3 (NLT): “I am going to prepare a place for you…so that where I am, there you may be also.”
  • Revelation 21:3 (NLT): “Look! God’s home is now among His people! He will live with them, and they will be His people.”

This is the culmination of God’s plan: eternal intimacy with humanity, where there is no more pain, sorrow, or separation.

What Emmanuel Means for Us Today

Jesus’ life reveals God’s heart: a desire to be near to everyone—regardless of their past or status.

  • He ate with sinners and tax collectors.
  • He welcomed children and healed outcasts.
  • He was present with the grieving, the lonely, and the proud.

When we are:

  • Lost, He is our guide.
  • Hurting, He is our comforter.
  • Weak, He is our strength.

“The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8, NLT)
